About the Balearic Islands ecotax
What is the Balearic Islands ecotax?
The Balearic Islands ecotax is a green tax levied on tourists staying in the Balearic Islands, which is used to promote sustainable tourism and protect the environment compensating the carbon footprint caused by the tourism activity on the islands. It is officially known as "impuesto del turismo sostenible", and it's levied since July 2016.
Who has to pay the ecotax?
All guests aged 16 years or older staying in tourist accommodations in the Balearic Islands such as hotels, hostels or apartments.
Passengers of cruise ships docked in any port of the Balearic Islands, regardless of the number of hours of stay in transit, are subject to the application of the tax. Cruise passengers whose ships have their base port in the Balearic Islands are exempt from paying the tax.
How is the ecotax calculated?
The ecotax is calculated based on the type of accommodation, the time of year, and the number of nights stayed. The tax rates vary depending on the type of accommodation, with higher rates for luxury hotels and lower rates for budget accommodations. See the table for the current ecotax rates.
- There are 2 possible discounts:
- 75 % discount on the rate, for stays in low season (between 1st of November and 30th of April).
- 50 % discount on the rate (or on the reduced low season rate) from the ninth day onwards, for stays of more than eight nights in the same establishment.
